Salt Water Misconception

There is a common misconception about “Salt Water” pools. There isn’t much difference from that to putting liquid chlorine or tablets in. There is still Chlorine in your pool.

The process in a salt pool works like this. As the water passes through the cell electrolysis breaks apart the salt in the water into it’s basic components, sodium and chloride. The chlorine gas produced is that does the work of sanitizing the water. During that process the two elements re-bond into salt and the process starts over.

Typically there is a lower average level of chlorine but it’s still just chlorine. That lower average may help to reduce the harmful effect that chlorine can have but it is still present.

I was told that a salt water system for an inground vinyl liner pool would damage the pool and the plumbing. Is this true?

The liner and plumbing in most cases is all plastic or PVC so “salt
water” poses no risk. In some cases things like heat exchangers in
your pool heater can be effected but if the salt system is installed,
operated and maintained properly there is little risk. The items that
usually have problems, metals like that heat exchanger and a ladder,
can usually be upgraded to a type that is resistant to the
electrolysis introduced by a slat water chlorine generator. In the
case of a ladder it's even easy to swap out for a plastic one!

What about the ring around an inground liner pool (that holes the liner in place) will the be affected - it is made of Alluminum

  • http://deys.ca billdeys

The ring your talking about is called Coping and we've not heard of
issues. Especially if the pool is bonded there shouldn't be an issue.

I understand a lot of communities are trying to ban the use of salt water systems as they are much more aggressive to the environment than initially conceived. Have you heard this to be true …. if so , what are your beliefs ?

We have been considering a pool for our backyard.  I have been confused about the difference.  I appreciate the simple explanation.  Is the cost of operating a salt water pool any different?
